A study investigated the impact of green tea on weight loss in obese Thais. These subjects consumed a healthy Thai diet which had 3 meals, for 12 weeks. This diet had 20% body fat, 15% protein, and 65% carbohydrates.

The components measured were BMI, body weight, body composition, resting energy expenditure, and substrate oxidation.

One group drank green tea and the other was given a placebo. The results showed a higher ratio of weight loss in participants who took green tea. They lost almost 3.3 kg (7.3 lbs.) more than the other group. [Ref]

Similarly, another study was done on the effect of green tea extract that is high in catechins on body weight and cardiovascular risks. Japanese men and women who had visceral fat-type obesity were selected for this study.

In a 12-week time period, one group was given 583 mg of catechins and the other was given 96 mg of catechins.

It was concluded that a significant reduction in body mass index, body weight, waist circumference, hip circumference, body fat ratio, and visceral fat area was seen in the catechin group. Systolic blood pressure and LDL cholesterol levels were also lower in the catechin group. [Ref]
