For a long time, HbA1c has been the main test used to check blood sugar control. It measures how much sugar is attached to your red blood cells and reflects your average blood sugar over the past three months.

However, this test only shows an average. It cannot tell the difference between someone whose blood sugar stays fairly steady and someone whose levels go up very high and drop very low throughout the day.

HbA1c is still a useful test, but it does not show the full picture. To better predict and prevent long-term complications, we need a more detailed measure. This is where Time in Range (TIR) comes in.

Using continuous glucose monitoring (CGM), TIR shows how often your blood sugar stays within a healthy range throughout the day.

Limitations of HbA1C:

One of the primary limitations of HbA1c is that it is only an average. A value like 7.0% may look good, but it does not show what is really happening to blood sugar levels during the day. 

Because it is an average, HbA1c can hide large fluctuations in blood glucose. A person may spend part of the day with very high blood sugar and another part with very low blood sugar, yet the HbA1c result can still appear normal.

● Time below range (TBR) – Tracks hypoglycemia. While tight control is good, a high TBR indicates you are at risk for dangerously low levels, which can cause immediate cognitive dysfunction and strain the heart.

Tracking TIR becomes useful when you turn the information into action. While the data is powerful, it is most effective when used as a roadmap for sustainable change. Here are a few tips to improve your TIR

Set your foundation

Firstly, consult your doctor. Every human body is different, and your healthcare team will help you establish personalized TIR goals.

For many, the standard target is more than 70% TIR, but factors like age, pregnancy, or sudden low sugar levels may require a custom range.

Leverage CGM data analysis

Do not focus on just one number; pay attention to the story your data is telling. Reviewing your CGM data each week helps you spot clear patterns, such as blood sugar spikes after meals caused by certain foods or drops in blood sugar during the night while you are asleep.

By looking at these patterns, you can make accurate decisions and changes to your diet and lifestyle to improve your health.
